Leyland coach
In 1983 a prototype for a new style of coach was introduced on to BR
This was a follow on from the 'success' of the Leyland railbuses as a cost saving exercise.
The coach was fitted out and placed into service on the Manchester to Brighton cross country service for passenger evaluation. Unfortunately this choice of route meant that the vehicle was compared with higher specification InterCity stock and was viewed in an unfavourable light which resulted in its premature withdrawal in 1983 following press criticism. The Leyland coach still exists today at the Llanelli and Mynnydd Mawr Railway in Morfa, Camarthenshire. It is now safely stored at Cynhidre where it is to be restored to its original condition for use on the former Burry Port and Gwendraeth Valley Railway with the Gwendraeth Railway Society |
