46035 - 97403 Ixion
This locomotive was converted from Class 46
1-CoCo-1 locomotive
No:D172. It
was acquired by R&DD and re-numbered 97403 and named "Ixion".
97403 was used as an adhesion research vehicle - one of its traction motors was disconnected and linked to a test coach carrying a mobile generator and a class 46 driver's desk. The axle was fitted with an encoder so axle speed could be accurately measured against train speed. It was also used to evaluate wheelslip. The train was hauled by class 97/2 No. 97201 (ex 24061). The loco carried its departmental number 97403 and was painted in departmental red and blue livery and named 'Ixion'. It was finally withdrawn in September 1990 and is preserved (as 46035) at Crewe Heritage Centre and is unfortunately out of use (2016) |
