Bulletin No:2

The Bulletin concerned the 'performance and efficiency testing' of a Eastern Region 'B1' Class 2-cylinder 4-6-0 Mixed Traffic Locomotive number 61353.  This loco had been designed by the LNER and had run only 46,000 miles.

The tests were undertaken to establish the following:

An indication of the level of efficiency of the locomotive
Means of comparing one locomotive with another on a common basis

Testing was undertaken on the static test plant at Rugby and on the line between Carlisle and Skipton, the main testing taking place between Appleby and Dent, a distance of approx 25 miles.

Here is a summary of the tests and a few pictures.
